Tropical depression Imelda brings life-threatening flash flooding to Texas
Areas of the Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana will experience upward of 2 feet of rainfall through Sept. 19. The rains are from slow-moving thunderstorms associated with tropical depression Imelda, which made landfall Sept. 17 as a weak tropical storm. Radar-estimated rain totals of 13 to 15 inches had been observed along the Matagorda coast near Freeport.
Currently there are six named storms and five areas to watch from Hawaii across the Americas and throughout the Atlantic. Hurricane Humberto has prompted a hurricane warning in Bermuda. Tropical Storm Jerry spun up well east of the Leeward Islands on Sept. 18. With winds of 45 mph, it’s forecast to strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane by late September. In the Pacific, Kiko, Lorena and Mario are all tropical storms.
